How to Layer Your Skincare Products the Right Way
Applying products in the wrong order can reduce their effectiveness. Here's the correct sequence — from cleanser to SPF — for your morning and evening routines.
The general rule for layering skincare is: lightest texture first, heaviest last. But there are nuances — some products are pH-dependent, some should never be mixed, and the gap between applications can matter.
The Core Principle: Thinnest to Thickest
Water-based products with small molecules (like serums) need to penetrate before thicker film-forming products (like moisturisers and sunscreen) seal them in. If you apply a heavy cream first, serums can't penetrate properly.
Morning Routine
- Cleanser — remove overnight sebum and residue
- Toner — balance pH and prep skin
- Vitamin C serum — antioxidant protection pairs with sunscreen
- Moisturiser — lock in hydration
- SPF 30+ — always the final step
Evening Routine
- Double cleanse — oil cleanser first, then water-based
- Exfoliant or treatment (AHA/BHA) — 2–3 nights per week
- Niacinamide serum — for pore refinement and brightening
- Retinol or peptide serum — for anti-ageing (alternate nights)
- Rich moisturiser or face oil — seal everything overnight
Applying products in the wrong order isn't just ineffective — it can actively reduce the potency of your actives and irritate your skin barrier.
Combinations to Avoid
Retinol + AHAs: both are potent exfoliants that can over-irritate when used simultaneously. Vitamin C + Retinol: different pH requirements reduce efficacy — use Vitamin C in the morning and retinol at night.
Wait Times Matter
Vitamin C and AHA/BHA products have lower pH formulations. Give them 20–30 minutes before your next step so they can work at the correct pH. For most other products, 60 seconds is sufficient.

This was exactly what I needed! I've been using serum wrong for years — applying it to dry hair at the roots. Going to try the damp-hair method tonight.
Great article. The tip about warming it between your palms made a huge difference — my serum used to clump until I started doing this.
